—— PROJECT

Epicenter Cycling

The Epicenter Cycling Monterey (Epicenter Monterey) tenant improvement project transformed an unfinished commercial shell into a vibrant and highly functional retail location tailored to the unique needs of a bike shop. Situated on the bustling Lighthouse Avenue in Monterey’s Cannery Row district, and positioned beneath a newly constructed residential building, the space offered a blank canvas with countless possibilities for customization.

Project Details

From Unfinished Shell to Showroom

When Epicenter Cycling took possession of the space, it was presented an unfinished concrete floor, bare gypsum walls, roughed-in utilities, and exposed ceiling structural elements. This raw state allowed the owners to fully envision and communicate their dream for a showroom that would not only serve the practical needs of a bike shop but also reflect the brand’s strong identity as a local, customer-centric business. The design process focused on crafting a clean, industrial aesthetic that would showcase the products while maintaining an inviting and energetic atmosphere.

Industrial Aesthetic Meets Functional Design

The decision to emphasize an industrial look was driven by the desire to highlight the bikes and display racks as the focal points of the space. Exposed and refined ductwork, painted ceiling utilities, and polished concrete floors all contribute to the minimalist, yet inviting appearance of the shop. The layout was meticulously planned to ensure seamless circulation for customers, while also providing adequate space for the various additional functions required in a bike shop, such as assembly and tune-ups.

Lighting to Enhance the Customer’s Experience

Lighting played a crucial role in bringing the space to life. The selected fixtures were chosen to create a lively atmosphere that complements the open, industrial design while ensuring that the products are prominently displayed. The retail checkout areas and service stations were thoughtfully integrated into the open floor plan, making them easily accessible to customers without disrupting the flow of the space.

Customer Comfort and Engagement

Understanding that customer experience is paramount, the design also included a comfortable waiting area along the broad windows facing Lighthouse Avenue. This space allows customers to enjoy natural light while waiting for repairs or simply taking a break from browsing Epicenter’s extensive selection of bikes and accessories. The placement of this waiting area not only enhances the overall customer experience but also encourages engagement with the shop’s offerings in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

A Showcase for Epicenter Cycling's Brand

The Epicenter Cycling Monterey project successfully turned an unfinished space into a dynamic retail environment that embodies the brand’s identity. The blend of industrial design elements with functional retail solutions creates a space that is both practical and visually appealing. This transformation has established Epicenter Cycling Monterey as a standout destination for cycling enthusiasts, reflecting the brand’s commitment to quality, customer service, and community engagement.
