—— PROJECT
Fawn Residence
Transforming a dated ranch into an airy retreat, the Fawn Residence in Carmel Valley underwent a comprehensive remodel that breathed new life into a previously dark and closed-off 2-bedroom, 1.5-bath home. The project evolved the outdated residence into a luminous and expansive 2-bedroom, 3-bath sanctuary with a master suite and office, blending modern design with the natural beauty of its surroundings.
This project was completed as an employee of Studio Schicketanz. Lorena served as main designer and job captain. Participating and leading in all stages of design, material selection, planning materials preparation, client management, design development and construction administration.

Project Details
The original layout of the ranch home failed to capitalize on the majestic elderly oak tree gracing the rear yard. With only the base of its trunk visible from the residence’s interior and with the layout lacking a master suite, the home's design compromised privacy and functionality. Additionally, the rear deck remained separate from the backyard, vastly underutilized and detached from the home's potential. By adjusting and elevating the roofline and introducing large sliding doors and clerestory windows, natural light now floods the interior, illuminating common areas and offering picturesque views of the towering oak tree. This design change created a unified connection between interior spaces and the surrounding natural beauty.
Key Features
Enhanced Natural Light and Views: The introduction of large sliding doors and clerestory windows allows sunlight to pour into the home, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere. These design elements also frame key views out, making nature an integral part of the living experience.
Reimagined Kitchen Layout: The kitchen underwent a strategic relocation to facilitate improved circulation. This move integrates the kitchen with the public area, extending an inviting atmosphere to the new rear deck and outdoor kitchen. Budget-conscious yet stylish cabinetry was incorporated, maintaining a high-end aesthetic while ensuring practicality and ease of use.
Lavish Master Suite: The revitalized layout now includes two full bathrooms, with an ensuite secondary bath featuring an oversized walk-in closet. The master suite boasts direct access to the hot tub area on the deck, offering a serene retreat amidst the verdant landscape.
Outdoor Integration: The back deck seamlessly melds with the rear patio, courtesy of wooden steps that navigate the transition. This design harmonizes the indoor and outdoor realms into a cohesive and inviting living environment, enhancing the home's connection to its natural surroundings.
Landscape Enhancements: Significant landscape enhancements further enrich the home's allure. A newly minted entry path and secluded patio visible from the office greet inhabitants and guests alike. Meticulously selected plantings provide privacy without obstructing sunlight, creating a tranquil and private haven.
Project Challenges
Design and Functionality: Transforming the original layout to maximize natural light and views while ensuring privacy and functionality was a key challenge. Adjusting the roofline and strategically placing windows and doors allowed for an effective solution.
Budget-Conscious Solutions: Maintaining a high-end aesthetic within budget constraints required creativity and strategic planning.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Transition: Ensuring a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces was crucial. Opening the space up to the deck and patio facilitated this connection.
Summary
The Fawn Residence honors the natural beauty of the surroundings while embracing modern comforts and a uniquely-California elegant indoor-outdoor living experience.
