Nestled in the serene backyard of a residential property in the Santa Cruz Harbor neighborhood, the Harbor Nest ADU showcases our focus on maximizing space, natural light, and family connectivity. Project Vision
Our goal for The Harbor Nest was to create a space that complements the existing main house while embodying the essence of coastal living, with modern touches. Our Ukiah architects focused on designing intimate yet open spaces while fitting it into a tight backyard site. We had minimal room to maneuver and used this design constraint to inform a unique layout that incorporates efficiency and custom features.
Key Features:
Efficient Layout: The ADU's compact design seamlessly integrates living spaces with the outdoor environment for maximum efficiency Large glazed doors open onto the patio, while the two story layout allows the family to inhabit a sizable interior space within a very modest footprint.
Natural Light Maximization: Large windows and strategically placed skylights bring in natural light while maintaining privacy, optimizing the site's orientation for sunlight and fresh coastal breezes.
Coastal Contemporary Aesthetics: Clean lines, a light color palette, and natural materials reflect the setting and harmonize with the original residence.
Privacy Considerations: Thoughtful window placement, landscape design, and architectural features ensure privacy despite close proximity to neighboring properties and the main residence on the property.
Outdoor Connection: Large sliding doors and a layout that encourages interaction with outdoor living areas, including a pool and patio, promote a seamless indoor-outdoor lifestyle.
Sustainable Elements: Eco-friendly materials and design elements throughout the ADU align with Santa Cruz's environmental values.
Project Challenges:
Space Optimization: Creating a fully functional living space on a compact site required meticulous planning and innovative layout solutions.
Maintaining Privacy: Ensuring privacy for both ADU occupants and neighbors with limited property setbacks was a critical challenge.
Architectural Harmony: Balancing the ADU's unique identity with its need to complement the existing main house was essential.
Summary
The Harbor Nest ADU goes beyond adding living space and creating density housing - it sets a standard for sustainable, efficient living that strengthens family connections while preserving individual privacy. It enhances property value and utility, serving as a model for harmonious secondary residence design in urban areas.
