This extensive renovation involved a complete reconfiguration of the residence, including a new kitchen, updated bathrooms, a reimagined master suite, and a full exterior overhaul. Reimagining a Dark, Outdated Home
Originally used as a weekend escape, the homeowners envisioned the Mar Monte house as their future retirement sanctuary. However, the initial structure was poorly built, with outdated features that made the home dark and uninviting. A thorough assessment revealed the need for significant upgrades to meet modern standards. Collaborating closely with the builder, the renovation focused on maximizing the budget while strategically enhancing the layout to increase natural light, improve energy efficiency, and create a more open, intentional flow between living spaces.
Enhancing Natural Light and Energy Efficiency
One of the key aspects of the renovation was the complete replacement and relocation of all door and window openings. The project introduced new thermally efficient aluminum windows and doors, dramatically improving the home’s energy performance and sound insulation, especially from traffic noise to the south. Skylights were added in the living room and kitchen, addressing the oppressive darkness of the original layout and flooding these areas with natural light.
Creating Open, Inviting Spaces
The new design also focused on opening up the dining room by adding a wide internal passage connecting it to the kitchen and living areas.
