Site-Specific Design - Maximizing Views and Light
Given the compact site and the unique constraints of Mendocino's architectural heritage, the design process emphasized capturing south-facing views and natural light. The residence's two-story structure is oriented to embrace the stunning seascape. The upper level houses bedrooms, each featuring a private balcony with high railings to shield against the prevailing westerly winds. These balconies, accessible via large sliding doors, allow natural light to flood the rooms even on foggy summer days, enhancing the indoor-outdoor connection. During the milder months, these doors can be left open, inviting the coastal breeze and sunlight to create a serene and refreshing living environment.
Connection and Gatherings
The ground floor is designed as a communal space, fostering togetherness and interaction. A spacious living and dining area forms the heart of the home, seamlessly extending to a rear yard. This space is versatile, accommodating both large gatherings and intimate family meals. The adjacent kitchen enhances the open-plan layout, making efficient use of the home’s limited footprint while maintaining a sense of spaciousness.
Material Integrity
Durability and sustainability were key considerations in material selection. The use of board and batten siding pays homage to the village’s historic residential architecture, ensuring the home blends seamlessly with its surroundings. Inside, the design transitions to a more modern aesthetic, with finishes that are both durable and meticulously detailed. This thoughtful combination of materials not only enhances the home's longevity in the coastal environment but also aligns with the timeless quality of Mendocino’s architectural character.
Blending Tradition and Modernity
The residence’s street-facing façade, featuring a welcoming front porch and main entry, exudes a familiar charm that resonates with the village’s historic context. The design strikes a delicate balance between timeless and contemporary elements, a blend that was crucial for securing approval from the historical advisory board. This project stands as a prime example of how modern architecture can respectfully coexist with historical precedents, creating a home that is both rooted in tradition and forward-looking in its design approach.
