—— PROJECT
Cahto Community Housing
The Cahto Community Housing project is set to develop a secure multifamily housing compound on the Tribe’s Northern California reservation lands. This initiative is designed to address the housing needs of the community while offering a safe and supportive environment for its residents. The project’s planning phase involved a comprehensive analysis of site development costs, utility locations, various grading scenarios, and accessibility for tribal members, ensuring that the final design meets the specific needs of the Cahto community.

Strategic Site Selection and Design
After careful consideration, a courtyard layout was chosen for the development. This design not only fosters a strong sense of community but also allows for a single, controlled access point, enhancing the security of the compound. The selected site, surrounded by trees, provides a serene setting for the housing units, contributing to a peaceful living environment. Multiple unit types and configurations were explored and approved by the Tribe.
Collaborative Development Through Homekey Tribal Program
Our firm partnered with LACO Associates to bring this project to life through the Homekey Tribal Program, an initiative funded by the California Department of Housing and Community Development. The Homekey Tribal Program offers critical financial support to Tribal Entities for the development of multifamily rental housing. This funding can be used for a range of housing projects, including the rehabilitation of existing structures, new construction of apartments, townhomes, or single-family rental homes, and even the conversion of non-residential spaces into residential housing.
Addressing Homelessness and Pandemic Impact
The Cahto Community Housing project is not just about building homes; it’s about providing permanent housing solutions for individuals and families experiencing homelessness or those at risk. The development will create safe, stable housing options that meet the urgent needs of the community, helping to mitigate the housing shortage for vulnerable populations within the Tribe.
A Vision for the Future
This housing project represents a significant step forward for the Cahto Tribe, ensuring that its members have access to secure, high-quality housing that supports their well-being. By integrating modern design with the natural beauty of the reservation, the development will offer a harmonious living environment that respects the land and its people. The project also exemplifies how collaborative efforts can bring transformative change to Tribal communities.
The Cahto Community Housing project is poised to become a model for sustainable, community-focused housing on Tribal lands, providing a safe and supportive environment for generations to come.
