Eureka Supportive Housing + Counseling Office
The Eureka Supportive Housing and Counseling Facility in Humboldt County stands as a welcoming space dedicated to serving the needs of Native American youth and families. Operated by a Native American Family Services agency, this facility offers both supportive housing and counseling services, providing a vital resource for the local community.
Project Details
Transforming a Turn of the Century Residence into a Community Resource
The project involved the comprehensive renovation of a 100-year-old, three-story residence that had previously been configured as a six-unit multifamily building. The transformation required an in-depth analysis of the existing structure, systems, and layout to repurpose the space effectively. The street-facing units were reimagined as the facility’s public-facing zone, with a rebuilt front porch leading into a welcoming waiting area. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a spacious common room, designed to serve multiple functions, including large meetings, overflow waiting, and agency-hosted events. A commercial kitchen and accessible bathroom enhance the utility of this space, which can be divided into two separate areas using temporary partition walls. The kitchen itself can also be enclosed as needed, offering flexibility for various functions.
Creating Private, Calming Spaces for Counseling
The facility’s counseling offices were carefully designed to ensure privacy and comfort for staff and clients alike. Each office features enhanced soundproofing to protect confidential conversations, particularly those involving youth. The layout includes a supply room, dedicated closet, and freestanding print area, which together streamline the facility’s operations while maintaining a clear separation between public and staff-only areas.
Inclusive and Accessible Housing Solutions
Beyond counseling services, the facility also addresses the need for supportive housing within the community. A ground floor residential unit was converted into a fully accessible living space, ensuring that the facility can accommodate individuals with diverse needs. This conversion is part of a broader effort to upgrade the entire building, which includes the installation of new windows and doors, as well as the application of upgraded siding to enhance both functionality and comfort.
A Beacon of Hope for Native American Youth
The Eureka Supportive Housing and Counseling Facility is more than just a building; it’s a beacon of hope for Native American youth in the surrounding areas. With its abundance of natural light and thoughtfully designed layout, the facility fosters a calming and supportive environment, creating a holistic space that serves the community’s needs with dignity and care.
This facility represents a significant investment in the well-being of Native American youth and families, offering a safe, nurturing environment where they can access the support and resources they need to thrive.
